Why not take this weekend coming up to go on a little trip? It could be a great opportunity to unwind, explore somewhere new, or simply recharge. There are so many exciting places within driving distance or a short flight away.
This one is a short flight away for my US East Coasters. Let's go to San Juan!
Day 1: Old San Juan Exploration
Morning:
- Start your day with breakfast at a local café in Old San Juan.
- Explore the historic forts: Begin with Castillo San Felipe del Morro (El Morro) and then visit Castillo San Cristóbal. Both offer stunning views of the coastline and Old San Juan.
- Walk along the Paseo de la Princesa, a picturesque promenade along the city walls.
Afternoon:
- Have lunch at a traditional Puerto Rican restaurant in Old San Juan. Princesa - Cocina Cultura is a favorite.
- Wander through the colorful streets of Old San Juan, filled with colonial architecture, shops, and galleries.
- Visit La Fortaleza, the official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico (guided tours available).
- Spend some time at Plaza de Armas, the main square of Old San Juan, and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
Evening:
- Enjoy dinner at a waterfront restaurant in Old San Juan, savoring local cuisine and seafood.
- Experience the nightlife in Old San Juan, with options ranging from live music venues to cozy bars and lounges. La Placita De Santurce is a favorite of mine and it never disappoints!
Day 2: Nature and Culture
Morning:
- Have breakfast at a local café or bakery.
- Head to El Yunque National Forest, about a 45-minute drive from San Juan.
- Explore the rainforest trails, such as La Mina Trail leading to La Mina Falls, and take in the lush flora and fauna.
Afternoon:
- Enjoy a picnic lunch within El Yunque or dine at one of the nearby restaurants.
- Visit Luquillo Beach, known for its beautiful white sand and clear waters, for some relaxation and swimming.
Evening:
- Return to San Juan in the late afternoon.
- Explore the Santurce neighborhood, known for its vibrant street art scene.
- Have dinner at a local restaurant in Santurce, offering a fusion of Puerto Rican and international cuisines.
Day 3: Beach Day and Culinary Delights
Morning:
- Start your day with breakfast at a beachside café in Isla Verde.
- Spend the morning relaxing on Isla Verde Beach, one of San Juan's most popular beaches, known for its soft sand and gentle waves.
Afternoon:
- Have lunch at a beachfront restaurant, enjoying fresh seafood and tropical cocktails.
- Visit Condado, another beautiful beach area, for some sunbathing or water sports activities.
Evening:
- Return to your accommodation to freshen up.
- Enjoy a farewell dinner at a top-rated restaurant in San Juan. We recommend Barrachina, home of Pina Coladas! Dinner and drinks, please.
- Take a leisurely stroll along the beach or waterfront to savor your last evening in San Juan.
